Why was my Meta ad account disabled for a payment issue?

Updated · By Ahmed, six years running Meta ads

Short answer

When the payment method for your ads fails, Meta pauses your ads and disables the ad account until you pay the amount due. Pay the balance in Billing & payments, fix or replace the payment method, and your ads resume; if Meta has also flagged unusual or disputed payments, follow the steps in Business Support Home.

Why ad payments fail

  • The bank declines the charge because of insufficient funds or a limit on the card. Meta charges you automatically when you reach your payment threshold, and again on your monthly bill date.“The card runs out of funds just as the account reaches its payment threshold.”
  • The card has expired, is inactive, or the details on file are wrong.“The card on the account expired and nobody updated it.”
  • Card verification fails. In some countries 3DS verification is required, and it can fail on a wrong CVV or a one-time code that never arrives.“The one-time code goes to a phone number the card holder no longer uses.”
  • The payment method is not supported in your country, or is already added to too many ad accounts. Meta says one payment method can typically be added to up to 10 ad accounts.“The same agency card is added to a long list of client ad accounts.”
  • The card has a maximum amount per transaction that is lower than your payment threshold.“The card caps single charges below the account’s payment threshold.”
  • Unusual payment activity, or high rates of failed or disputed payments. Meta lists these as reasons it may place advertising restrictions, not just pause ads.“Several charges are disputed with the bank before anyone checks them in Billing & payments.”

How to fix the payment

  1. Go to Billing & payments, select the ad account and read the error. You may see an error saying the account is unsettled. Meta says you need to be an admin of the ad account to pay.
  2. Check the payment method: supported in your country, enabled for online transactions, has a CVV, not expired, details entered correctly, enough funds, and linked to a phone you can get one-time codes on.
  3. Pay the balance: in Billing & payments, select the ad account, click Payment methods, then Pay now. Choose an existing payment method or add a new one. If the payment keeps failing, Meta suggests trying again later with a different card.
  4. If the account runs on available funds (prepaid) rather than automatic billing, click Add funds instead. Meta says the account may take a little while to return to good standing.
  5. Prevent a repeat: add a backup payment method, keep enough funds near your monthly bill date, and if your card has a per-transaction limit, lower your payment threshold to match it. For prepaid accounts, set up auto reload.
  6. If ads are still paused after you pay, check whether you have hit the daily spending limit Meta sets. It resets at midnight in your ad account’s time zone.
  7. If Business Support Home shows a restriction for unusual payment activity, follow the steps in its What you can do section, then contact support there if the payment still fails.

After you pay, or if it still fails

  1. Once the balance is paid or enough funds are added, Meta says it resumes active and scheduled ads and tries to make up lost time against your original campaign dates and budgets.
  2. If you have tried the steps above and payments still fail, go to Business Support Home and click Contact support at the bottom of the page.
  3. If you do not recognise a charge, check your payment history in Billing & payments and ask anyone who shares the ad account or card before you dispute it with your bank. Meta lists high rates of disputed payments as a reason for advertising restrictions.
  4. Do not open a new ad account to keep advertising while the old balance is unpaid. Pay what the disabled account owes; Meta says it stays disabled until the amount due is paid.
  5. Keep records: the error message, the date, the payment you made and the receipt Meta sends to the Billing section and the account’s email.

This supplement ad combines a personal-attribute callout, a specific weight-loss result, guaranteed results, clickbait and a URL shortener, so it is very likely to be rejected.

Personal Attributeshigh

“Are you struggling with belly fat?” · primary text

The ad asserts a personal characteristic about the viewer by addressing them directly about a body condition.

Fix: Our gummies are designed to support a healthy metabolism.

Unrealistic Outcomeshigh

“helped Maria lose 12 kg in 3 weeks!!!” · primary text

A specific weight-loss amount within a short timeframe is an exaggerated, unrealistic result, and supplement ads must target 18+.

Fix: Remove the specific result; use a general statement such as 'Part of a balanced routine for healthy weight management.'

Unrealistic Outcomeshigh

“GUARANTEED RESULTS” · headline

Guaranteed results are a prohibited claim for health and weight-loss products.

Fix: Use 'Start your wellness routine today' or remove the claim entirely.

Low Quality or Sensational Contentmedium

“Doctors hate this one trick.” · primary text

This is classic clickbait, and the triple exclamation marks add to the sensational tone.

Fix: Replace with 'Learn how our gummies fit into a healthy routine.'

Unrealistic Outcomeshigh

“See the before and after pics.” · primary text

Before-and-after comparisons for weight loss are high risk and draw rejection.

Fix: Remove the before-and-after reference and focus on the product's ingredients.

URL shorteners hide the true destination and are high risk, and can lead to account-level enforcement.

Fix: Use the full, direct landing page URL on the brand's own domain.

Questions

Will Meta keep charging me while the account is disabled?

No. Meta says you won’t receive any additional charges until you pay the amount due, and your ads stay paused until then.

Why was I charged several times in one month?

Meta charges you each time your ad costs reach your payment threshold, then again on your monthly bill date for anything left over. Your threshold can rise as you build a record of successful payments.

I paid, so why are my ads still not running?

A payment made with Pay now can take up to 5 minutes to show on the account, and adding funds to a prepaid account can take a little longer. If ads still stop, you may have reached the daily spending limit Meta sets, which resets the next day.

Can I use one card on all my client ad accounts?

Only up to a point. Meta may limit how many ad accounts can add the same payment method, typically up to 10, so a card spread across many accounts can be refused.

Is a payment disable the same as a policy restriction?

Not usually. A failed payment disables the account until you pay, but Meta can also place advertising restrictions, such as spending limits or lost payment features, when it sees unusual payment activity or high rates of failed or disputed payments.

Can I pay a disabled account from India?

Meta notes that advertisers in India may not be able to use Pay now or Add funds to pay the balance while the ad account is disabled. Check Billing & payments, and contact support in Business Support Home if neither option works.
